A Sandwich a Day: Cubano from Cafe Con Leche
After Dennis' write-up on Cafecito, I've absolutely been craving a Cubano. Cheesy, gooey, meaty, pressed: who could blame me? My wife made it worse by taking Dennis' suggestion on her lunch hour last week. I tried faking one at home (essentially a grilled cheddar on wheat with turkey and pickles), but that hardly did the trick. I had to have the real thing. So I decided to check out nearby Cafe Con Leche, a small restaurant in Logan Square.
Unfortunately, after trying their Cubano ($6.95), I'm craving one even more. It's not that the Cubano was bad; it was just... a little underwhelming. More cheese to bind everything together would have definitely helped. When I picked the sandwich up the first time, the top separated from the bottom, which is never a good sign when you're eating a pressed sandwich. The roast pork and ham could have used a little more flavor, and I could hardly taste the paper-thin pickles. That being said, the included side of yellow mustard went a long way toward pulling all the elements of the sandwich together.
So while I certainly got my fix, I'm still hungry for a Cubano. Does anyone have a suggestion of where I can find a great one?
