A Sandwich a Day: The Frisco at Nookie's Tree

I braved the brunch crowds this past weekend and fought (read: placidly stood in the vestibule and waited) my way to a table at Nookie's Tree in Lakeview, one of a small local chain of restaurants started in the '70s by a Greek immigrant and his coworker. If you've ever passed a Nookie's on the weekend, you've probably seen the small groups of people waiting outside and, like me, may have been deterred by these sightings. But my avoidance was unfounded, at least this weekend, as I waited only ten minutes for a table.
Though Nookie's website self-advertises itself as "a yummy and affordable everyday alternative to home cooking," I can't remember the last time I had chicken, pesto, mozzarella, tomato, roasted red pepper, romaine, rosemary garlic aioli, and some great bread laying around. But I'm happy to return to Nookie's to sate my next craving with The Frisco ($10.95). Comforting is the name of the game here, and the crunchy toasted bread, melty mozzarella, and hint of herbs from the pesto and aioli, expertly hit that warm, fuzzy spot that demands to be tickled every so often. Though an unfamiliar texture, the side of crunchy yet slightly chewy cottage fries (or what are really the thickest cut potato chips I've ever seen) was the perfect salty accompaniment.
