Serious Eats Neighborhood Guides: Dana Benigno's Ukrainian Village
Editor's Note: Every other week we like to bring you another installment of Serious Eats Neighborhood Guides, which gives local chefs and food personalities a chance to chat about the restaurants that they frequent in their on 'hoods. Last time, chef Phil Rubino took us on a tour of Wrigleyville. This week, Dana Benigno, the Executive Director for Green City Market, dishes out some of her favorite places around the Ukrainian Village, with a little bit of West Town thrown in.

Earlier this month, the Green City Market (named by CNN as one of the five best farmers' markets in the country for travelers) moved from its indoor winter location at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum to its outdoor location in Lincoln Park. With this move outdoors came a significantly larger vendor list as well as an extra market day of shopping per week, making Wednesday and Saturday mornings prime time for Lincoln Park. The availability for seasonal and truly local foodstuffs, at the only market in the country that requires each of its vendors to hold third party certification such as USDA organic, has since increased for all of us fortunate enough to live within proximity of this great market.
And that's where Dana Benigno enters the picture. Dana is the Executive Director for Green City Market, whose board of directors includes award winning chefs Sarah Stegner, Rick Bayless, and Bruce Sherman. Dana is a proud resident of Ukrainian Village, and what follows is a list of the places you might find her when she's not busy at the market. Hope you enjoy.

Dinner Spot: I love West Town Tavern and Arami, which is very close.
Bar: Bar DeVille. [enough said.]
Sandwich: Turkey Rueban at DeLux Bar & Grill, although it is so decadent I usually steal bites from my friends plates to avoid the guilt.
Essential neighborhood spot: My garden is my favorite coffee and wine bar and dinner spot. I think the other people in the hood might say Atomix.

Pizza: Coalfire Pizza. I love the sausage and red pepper pizza.
Burger: I haven't had one in my neighborhood yet! But I want to try The Beetle which I hear is terrific.

Poutine from Leopold [Photograph: Huge Galdones]
Date night: Leopold is a good date place in my neighborhood and Rootstock near Augusta and California is also a good place.

Pastry/Dessert: Black Dog Gelato is my favorite treat that is a short walk away. I love all the flavors and always try the unusual combination. There is a salted carmel goat cheese gelato that is delicious!
Bread: I get all my bread at Green City Market, of course, as I am there twice per week.
Coffee: Atomix or Star Lounge.
Breakfast: Flo is my favorite because I love eggs with black beans and salsa or chilaquiles but I also like the Breakfast Club, which I found trying to avoid a traffic jam on Grand.
Dive: I once had a drink in Cleo's. I think they could possibly define "dive" in my neighborhood, but it is always packed on weekend.
Anything else you wanna shout out to that doesn't fit the categories? Yes. I love Outpost on Grand Ave., as they take the local environmental view of home, fashion, and art. Everything in the store is locally created.
