A Sandwich a Day: Crispy Brook Trout at Frog N Snail

Based on an excellent dinner I recently had at Frog N Snail, Dale Levitski's newly opened second restaurant, I was prepared for a great sandwich for lunch last weekend. I was not, however, prepared for three great sandwiches, which is what my two dining companions and I received. Never before have I had such a sandwich reviewer's dilemma. To be perfectly honest, the only reason the Crispy Brook Trout Sandwich ($16) is featured here is because it produced the best glamour shot. But don't let this deter you from trying either the Croque Madame ($16), a surprisingly faithful rendition of the Sprout classic, or the Open-Faced Turkey and Pastrami Sandwich ($14), which features some of the most pitch-perfect pastrami I have ever tasted.

Sandwiched between two soft and buttery slices of pumpernickel is a meaty fillet of trout, fresh red onion, sweet roasted tomato, just a shade of mustard, and a crunchy and creamy Marcona almond spread that pushes the whole sandwich into dangerously delicious territory; as in, I'm going to need to drastically up my intake of Crispy Brook Trout Sandwiches, which may be dangerous for both my wallet and my waistline. But instead, I will try desperately to learn a lesson in balance from these well-crafted sandwiches and treat myself on a monthly rather than weekly basis.
