A Sandwich a Day: Portuguese Pork Chop Sandwich at Sweet Station
Sure, I was at Sweet Station in Chicago's Chinatown eating a Portuguese Pork Chop Sandwich ($3.95), but after one bite I was transported immediately to Madison Square Park in New York. Hang with me. The bun is pillowy and extra soft, almost like a Martin's potato roll. When topped with mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato, this sandwich comes off tasting shockingly like a burger from the Shake Shack—you know, just without the smashed beef.
Instead, the sandwich is stuffed with crispy marinated slices of pork chop. I'm not sure what exactly makes it Portuguese, but I was more than happy with the result, since the meat is flavorful without being greasy. I will admit that I felt a little conflicted about snacking on something so seemingly American while in Chinatown, especially when I knew that other delicious dishes were just around the corner. But that unease only lasted until about the second bite. Oh, and the sandwich also comes on a bed of hot and crispy fries, which, much like those found at the Shake Shack, are serviceable, if not quite as good as the main attraction.
