Of my favorite dishes you can find at Portillo's, none makes less sense than the Grilled Tuna Sandwich ($4.99). After all, this is a glorified hot dog stand, so while I could excuse a fried fish sandwich or something like that, a thick slab of tuna feels off. Right? Turns out I was wrong, as any hesitations you may have disappear once you take one bite.
The firm fish gets a flavor char from the grill, so that it's the dominant flavor, with the sweet bun, crunchy lettuce, and sharp red onion playing a supporting role. Sure, this one might always be the odd man out on the menu, but since it gets the same care and attention that goes into the restaurant's faithful recreations of Chicago street food, it's one that deserves some recognition.
