A Sandwich a Day: Nick's Pulled Lamb Sandwich from Popeye's in Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva is one of those places we Illinois folk escape to during the summer to get away for a day, far from the maddening crowds (bonus points to those of you that get the literary reference). Although it's in the next state over, it really isn't that far from Chicago (all told, it's about an hour and a half drive from the city). Plus, you get to eat at Popeye's, which isn't affiliated with the fast food restaurant. It's a kitschy Atlantic-themed restaurant with beautiful views of the lake, but what really grabs you are the rotisseries out front with the spinning pig and hunks of lamb.
Nick's Pulled Lamb Sandwich (8 oz, $16.99) comes on a commercial bun dressed with garlic butter, along with tomato, red onion, and tzatziki sauce—sort of like a gyro. While the plain and pale bun doesn't contribute much, the lamb is supremely tender, seasoned liberally and well salted. The lamb is rich enough to the point where you might ditch the bun and just jab at it with a fork with an occasional bite of sweet red onion. It'll definitely fuel you through the lazy day in Lake Geneva.
