A Sandwich a Day: The Grilled Vegetable Panini at Salad House
Don't let the name deceive you, Lakeview's Salad House has far more to offer than just the green stuff. Aside from the seemingly limitless combination of fresh salad toppers, the tiny storefront offers an assortment of wraps as well as a make-your-own sandwich bar. But the standout at this hole-in-the-wall destination is a secret sandwich list that doesn't appear on the storefront's website or handout menu.
And nestled toward the bottom of that menu is the Grilled Vegetable Panini ($6.99). Portobello mushrooms and eggplant pieces are grilled and topped with zucchini, red onions, tomato slices, and roasted red peppers before everything is coated in a thick layer of creamy mozzarella cheese. The veggie mix is then pressed between two thick slices of white bread and toasted. The assortment of vegetables lends itself to a variety of flavors and textures, resulting in a sandwich that's both crunchy and chewy, savory and sweet. And though I'm generally more inclined to choose sandwiches catering to my carnivorous side, this grilled vegetable panini was one of the better sandwiches I've eaten for this blog.
