Serious Eats: Chicago
Kuma's Corner Suburban Scare
That collective gasp emanating from Chicago's burger obsessed over the weekend can be traced to one article in the RedEye, which seemed to suggest that Kuma's Corner was getting ready to open a new location. But instead of expanding to another hip Chicago neighborhood, evidence pointed to the most un-Kuma's-like location in the entire world: the Woodfield Mall in suburban Schaumburg. RedEye posted a picture of a mall directory clearly showing that a "Kuma's Corner" was coming soon. Luckily, any worries about selling out were quickly squashed by Kuma's Executive Chef, Luke Tobias, who matter-of-factly noted the following on Twitter: "We are not opening a Kuma's Corner in Woodfield Mall. The end." (He then went on to suggest that they would open at "Mall of the Moon," and also on the "rings of Saturn." One can only hope.)
So what the hell the happened? Well, the good folks over at Chicagoist may have cracked the code. Turns out there is an Asian bistro in the suburbs called Kuma's, which might explain confusion. Of course, we may never know why the "Corner" was added to the sign, but have a feeling that the person responsible was just very hungry.
