A Sandwich a Day: Pulled Pork Sandwich from Smoque BBQ

A Sandwich a Day

Reviews of Chicago sandwiches.

Smoque BBQ in Irving Park takes a unique approach to barbecue. Rather than pledging allegiance to any particular region or style's flag, Smoque serves perfected offerings from all over the South like some sort of smoky barbecue melting pot.

The Pulled Pork Sandwich ($7.45) is as good a place as any to jump into the varied menu. Pork shoulder is smoked for 12 hours before being pulled by hand and plopped between a buttery, pillowy bun. The pink hued meat packs serious smoke flavor, which is only enhanced by the house-made barbecue sauce (go for the more complex spicy version if you can handle the kick). A few forkfuls of the sweet and tangy coleslaw brightens everything considerably. While you could certainly pair this sandwich with one of Smoque's excellent housemade sides, I chose to tack on a quarter slab of St. Louis Ribs ($4.50) instead. Meat with a side of meat is always a good decision, plus isn't it nice to surround yourself with as many varied barbecue viewpoints as possible?
