TGI Fry-Day: House Made Tots at 2 Sparrows
Every sandwich at 2 Sparrows comes with either a side salad or house made tater tots. Talk about an easy pick. The tater tots are without peer in Chicago (though I'd love to be proved wrong about this). Constructed of layer upon layer of crispy potato strings all wrapped in a handy bite-sized form, each is deliriously crispy on the exterior, yet smooth and soft within. Besides making your own, these might be as good as it gets.
2 Sparrows obviously knows this, because the restaurant dishes them out like rare truffles. Sure, they are larger than the tots I grew up with, but that still only left me with five little beauties to contemplate devouring. My first thought was that I'd need to find a way to hoard these more carefully than Napoleon Dynamite ever thought possible. As we all learned, his totty pocket (a term honestly listed in Urban Dictionary), was no match for a surprise kick from a hungry foe. But while planning my strategy, I ate all of them. Solved that one.
