Jewish Food to Take Over Chicago (Hopefully)
Editor's Note: Here's another decidedly behind-the-times report on food trends in Chicago.
I'm not exactly the person to consult on upcoming trends (a number of other blogs cover that scene very well), but while devouring the largest, lightest, and airiest matzoh ball I've ever faced at Au Cheval last night, it finally dawned on me that Chicago is in the midst of something of a Jewish food wave. Of course, I should have known something was up after placing Reno's bagels on my best bites of 2012 list, but that's only the beginning.
According to Time Out Chicago, Au Cheval's owner, Brendan Sodikoff, plans to open a dedicated Jewish diner called Dillman's. Along with that matzoh ball soup, Sodikoff promises other Jewish deli "signatures," including freshly boiled and baked bagels!
Want more? Stephanie Izard's recently opened Little Goat also has bagels on its menu. It'll take time to see how the options at Little Goat and Dillman's stack up to Reno, but it's kind of astonishing that Chicago is turning into something of a bagel hotspot.
