Skokie and Jamaican cuisine isn't exactly a natural association, but why not? De-Jred is a homey, authentic little BYO restaurant a block from the Yellow Line Oakton stop featuring a menu laden with curry goat, oxtails, saltfish, and, of course, jerk chicken.

The jerk chicken sandwich ($5.99) sandwich tastes like the rich, moist chicken has been slow-cooked for hours in peppery jerk spices. Saying yes to everything here will net you a slice of American cheese (which oddly works), lettuce, mayonnaise, tomatoes, and cucumbers, which help cut the noticeable heat of the chicken and add a nice crunch. It's all stacked up on thin white bread that is somewhere between tea time finger sandwiches and the stuff in an Uncle John's box that I call napkins.

Josh Conley is single-handedly trying to re-introduce the verb beget into the everyday lexicon. He traveled to Easter Island one Christmas out of sheer irony. He excises a hefty syntax, and shamelessly promotes the color orange. His wife begat him two small children that he regularly belittles HERE.
