TGI Fry-Day: Churros at Vera
Either I have a serious weakness for any churro placed before me, or I'm just getting really good at tracking them down. Obviously, there is Xoco, but I'm also a huge fan of the offerings coming from Masa Azul. I definitely wasn't looking for more when I visited Vera in the West Loop—I didn't even know the Spanish joint served them. But after a stellar meal, and a couple lamb bocadillos, I saw the churros ($5) staring at me from the menu. How could I pass them up?
Like all great versions, they are crisp on the outside. But on the inside they manage to hover between creamy and airy, which I realize sounds slightly crazy. While good on their own, they are destined to be dunked in the rich chocolate sauce served on the side.
Like most dishes at Vera, the churros make for incisive and bold bite. Just make sure this is the last one you take before walking out the door.
