"To my surprise, the turkey pastrami is excellent. I always have my misgivings about replacing red meat with turkey, but in this case, it's a non-issue. It's tender, very flavorful, and moist, seasoned with classic peppery pastrami spices. The thousand island dressing bolsters the sandwich with creamy richness and a bit of sweet tanginess, and the sauerkraut adds a bright sour kick along with the lightly crunchy texture of the cabbage." "The pulled pork sandwich is killer, especially topped with cole slaw. It's tender and porky, without being too soft, and the cole slaw is a must; it adds fresh tangy cabbage crunch, and the best part is that it's not overdressed, so the freshness of the vegetables genuinely comes through." "It might not look particularly special, but this is a solid pastrami sandwich. There's just something about the combination of the meat, cheese, dressing, and the toasted bread that really makes this sandwich part of my regular lunch rotation." Read more here >>

The Blockbuster at Fontano's ($5.50 for 6

"The very first sandwich on the menu is the Blockbuster, and it's up top for a reason; this is a bold sandwich, featuring layers of ham, salami, capocollo, provolone, and Swiss. When piled together, these meats are admittedly difficult to discern from each other, but what you do get is a dense, salty, meaty, Italian sub. The shamelessly fat-flecked meat is rich and cradled in a Gonella sandwich roll, which makes the whole thing chewy in a good way. " Read more here >>

"The Sergio's Special ($8.89) is one of my favorite sandwiches on the menu. Salty French Madrange ham is paired with relatively dry and nutty gruyere, which are both countered with just a bit of sweet mango chutney. The surprising addition of sliced pickled jalapeños cuts through the rest of the flavors." Read more here >>

The Skribeye at Skrine Chops ($12)

"Man, do I love steak, even though I can't afford it very often. And the Skribeye (best name ever) doesn't disappoint. It's grilled to order (in my case, medium-rare on the dot), and it comes on a puffy yet sturdy white bread bun. The eight ounces of char-grilled steak rests on a bed of rich buttery mashed Yukon Gold potatoes and has a sprinkle of blue cheese for a counterbalanced flavor. If the potatoes sound like too much starch on an already starchy bun, it's not, because somehow it works miraculously well. The steak is tender and juicy, no dental floss needed, and is deeply beefy. This is meat and potatoes on a bun, and it's straight up satisfying." Read more here >>

"I still daydream about this thing. It's pretty simple, featuring roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and yellow mustard. It's pressed while being grilled, which makes it flat, crisp, and dense. There's a deep flavor to the roast pork, the familiar taste of hot ham, melted cheese, and the vinegar from the pickles and mustard makes the entire thing a masterpiece." Read more here >>

"When we hunkered down with a box o' sandwiches to try every single offering at Potbelly , we knew certain sandwiches would be better than others. And there's no doubt you'll be happy with A Wreck or the smoked ham. But the one that surprised us the most was the plain-looking turkey breast sandwich. Flavorful but never overbearing, it's a strangely satisfying choice." Read more here >>

"The Le Canard sandwich, which means "the duck" in French (oui, oui!) is herbed duck confit, Fromager d'Affinois, shallot confit, whole grain mustard, and greens, all on a chewy rustic baguette. The duck is extremely soft and tender with a tiny hit of gamy duck flavor, and its flavor plays with the Fromager d'Affinois, which is silky, buttery, and rich." Read more here >>

Egg Salad & Arugula Sandwich at Pret a Manger

"Restaurants have been wrapping up sandwiches for years now, but no place has done it with the same care or attention as the London-based chain, Pret a Manger. Instead of piling the sandwiches with excessive vegetables or condiments, each creation is stripped down to its essential parts. Though many are good--our colleagues in the New York office even catalogued them all--none of the offerings brings to mind as many memories of London as the Egg Salad & Arugula. Sure, watercress is the usual flavorful green of choice over there instead of arugula, but the effect is the same: creamy chunks of egg salad, broken up by peppery greens." Read more here >>

Classic Special Bánh Mì at Ba Le ($5.95)

"My favorite bánh mì at Ba Le is the classic special, which is layered with pate, ham, headcheese, and pork roll. The pate has that strong, iron-like liver flavor (it is liver, after all), and the sliced meats add up to a hammy, porky, and satisfying sandwich. It's all complimented with the sweet pickled daikon radish and carrot, and is served on a crackly, airy baguette that makes bánh mì so unique." Read more here >>
