A Sandwich a Day: The Chocolate Cake and Salted Peanut Gelato Donut Sandwich From Black Dog Gelato
This might not be the typical sandwich you're used to from A Sandwich a Day, but since I'm your resident self-proclaimed troublemaker, well, that shouldn't surprise you too much. On August 29th, Black Dog Gelato teamed up with the Glazed and Infused doughnut folks to create sandwiches of insanely diabetic proportions. Unfortunately, it was only a single day event, so if you're reading this right now, you've already missed out.
They came up with four types: Lemon doughnut with blueberry French toast gelato, chocolate cake doughnut with Nutella and salty pretzel gelato, Terry's Toffee doughnut with milk stout gelato, and last but not least, a giant apple fritter with salted peanut gelato (all $6, fritter sandwich $8). Yes, you read all that correctly. Talk about balls to the wall, folks.
If you've never had a Glazed and Infused doughnut before, they're big. Like, the size of my hand big, with the little wiggly fingers all stretched out (step off, I have small childlike hands that I've been told are creepy, which makes me sad inside). They're also decadent, rich, and sugary. The chocolate doughnut sandwich (pictured above) is cake-like and fudgy, glazed with even more chocolate, and paired with even more chocolate—this time in the form of Nutella gelato studded with salty pretzel bits. Yes, it's as tooth-aching as it sounds, with the sweet starchy cake doughnut around cold and sweet gelato, and tiny salt bombs hidden inside.
So I lied, there's two sandwiches in this post; the Terry's Toffee doughnut with milk stout gelato (Terry's Toffee is a hometown favorite) concoction, stuffed with milk stout gelato, tastes like a coffee cake pumped with cold, mildly flavored stout ice cream. Between the two, the chocolate was my favorite. In fact, I should have only gotten one. But you know, you don't wanna get mixed up with a guy like me. I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel.
