Chicago Tacos: Paratha Tacos at En Hakkore
Earlier today, Titus posted about the incredible number of tacos on the city's South Side. It's kind of unbelievable how many of the options I still need to try (seriously, did you see those al pastor tacos at Mario's?). Instead of trying to compete with his exhaustive list, I decided to celebrate National Taco Day by simply posting about one of the best tacos I've enjoyed recently, even if it is very definition of nontraditional.
I speak of the paratha tacos ($7.50) at En Hakkore. As you may have guessed by the restaurant's name, this is a Korean restaurant (one that serves an incredible bowl of bibimbap). But these aren't necessarily "Korean tacos" either. Instead of a corn tortilla, En Hakkore uses a paratha, which is an Indian flatbread. The paratha is flaky, almost like a scallion pancake, but with none of the grease. It evokes the softest flour tortilla you can imagine.
The tacos are topped with crisp shredded lettuce and a creamy and spicy sauce made from a combination of gochujang and mayonnaise. Perhaps it was the pinkish hue of that sauce, but when mixed with the grilled meat and fluffy paratha, I started having flashes of the special sauce on a Big Mac. Was I caught off guard? Yes. Did I eat the whole offering in less than a minute? You bet.
