I wasn't expecting the Italian ($7.75 for 7-inch size) at Snarf's to be just like the authentic and amazing classic Italian subs found elsewhere in the city, and that turned out to be the key to enjoying it. Because even though it has all the right meats—salami, pepperoni, capicola, and mortadella—other details aren't quite the same.
Because it's toasted, the bread is less chewy and more flaky than a classic Italian roll, but it holds the pile of meat together nicely, even when it's folded over into a kind of roll shape instead of piled neatly. Oh, and when you get it with everything, it's slathered in mayo which is another big difference.
But this sandwich still holds it own. Another perk? The 7-inch sandwich is like Goldilocks' dream size—smaller than a massive foot long sub but still nice and big. It's just right.
