A Sandwich a Day: Apple Pie Sandwich at Spicy Monkey Soup Company
This post title is clearly misleading, right? An apple pie sandwich? Yep, you read it right, except it's nothing like you think‐it's a type of grilled cheese from Spicy Monkey Soup Co. When I opted for the apple pie ($8), it sounded the most out of the ordinary of the selections, but unfortunately it ended up being pretty ordinary.
That's not to say it wasn't good. The sandwich starts with nice, thick sesame seed bread, which holds the ingredients well and has a nice, nutty flavor on its own. Thin shavings of Granny Smith apples are piled on each side of the bread, and they're definitely not skimping on these crisp, juicy slices. They add a great freshness to the sandwich, but dominate the flavor profile, leaving little room for the rich bacon and cheese to shine. Two thin strips of bacon are a bit lost in the middle of two slices of mild cheddar cheese, which could be remedied with a heartier cut or even just a couple more slices. The brown sugar flavor is very faint, if detected at all, which left the sandwich feeling slightly dry. It's a satisfying grilled cheese, sure, but next time I'll try something else on the menu.
