There are tourist sites that Chicagoans love to hate (looking at you, Navy Pier), and then there are those we simply love. Millennium Park is definitely in the latter camp.
'magnolia bakery' on Serious Eats
I'll repeat what I've said in the past: in terms of sweets, Chicago is a blessed city. In no particular order—because it was hard enough to pick my favorites—here are my top ten for the year.
As the hub of Chicago, The Loop has no shortage of places to find a bite to eat. But not all of us are stock brokers or businessmen with expense accounts, nor do we have the time to sit through coursed out menus. Most of us just need something to eat quickly, and we'd like to find a place that's good and cheap.
You've probably heard of Magnolia Bakery thanks to their famous cupcakes. I'd like to change that. Though the cupcakes are overly sweet, the crust on their apple pie is remarkable, their classic icebox pies and cakes will make you wonder why other bakeries haven't tried to copy them yet, and I can't imagine anyone would be angry if you showed up at a party with a dozen impeccably made mini cheesecakes instead of cupcakes.
