There are tourist sites that Chicagoans love to hate (looking at you, Navy Pier), and then there are those we simply love. Millennium Park is definitely in the latter camp.
'protein bar' on Serious Eats
As the first meal of a very busy day, breakfast is the one we often think the least about. (Plus, taking pictures of food is immeasurably harder before a cup of coffee.) It's automatic, almost like a ritual, and personal.
When it gets really cold, like it is right now, workers in Chicago take advantage of one of the city's little known assets: the Pedway. This mostly underground path—with a few covered pedestrian bridges thrown in—allows workers to shuffle to and from work without getting battered by the elements. As I found out, you can also eat down there.
Step into any of the five Protein Bar locations slung across downtown Chicago, and it is easy to realize you've ventured into health-food country. But it's OK, proceed not with caution—the food is good.
