The Chicago Food Glossary: A Guide to the Unique Dishes of the Windy City

Chicago Nick Kindelsperger 27 comments

Like all great cities should, Chicago has a collection of dishes that were invented within its borders and that you can't get anywhere else. I decided to create this list to help keep track of them all. More

Chicago: Hipster Pizza Heaven at The Boiler Room

Slice: Chicago Daniel Zemans 8 comments

Logan Square may increasingly be a hipster enclave shunned by people who have lived in Chicago for more than a few years, but those who stay away are missing out on some delicious food. Newcomer The Boiler Room serves up a tasty thin-crust pizza topped with giardiniera and some delicious pies by the slice. More

Sensational Sausage Makes Good Pizza Great at Joe's Italian Villa Pizza Inc.

Daniel Zemans 9 comments

With a crisp cracker-thin crust, slightly sweet sauce, and some good browned commercial mozzarella, Joe's Italian Villa in Bridgeview, Illinois, puts out a good tavern-cut pie. But if you order their house-made fennel and pepper-packed sausage on top, you are in for a real treat. More

Villa Nova: A Neighborhood Institution the Whole City Should Discover

Daniel Zemans 7 comments

Passionate Chicago Slice commenter cpd007 has told me to go to Villa Nova Pizza a couple of times. I had every confidence in the recommendation, but Stickney, a small suburb located just southwest of Cicero, is not exactly on the way to anywhere I normally go. But I'm always up to explore new places when new pizza is involved and I recently made the trip. More

Aurelio's: South Side Chain Is Tops for Sweet Sauce Crowd

Daniel Zemans 15 comments

If you know anyone who grew up in the southern suburbs of Chicago at any point in the last 50 years, the chances are good they have a deep love for pizza at Aurelio's. Opened as a restaurant that would star beef sandwiches by 26-year-old Joe Aurelio Sr. in Homewood in 1959, the popularity of the pizza quickly redefined the place as a pizzeria. More

Manzo's Pizzeria & Ristorante: Proof That Great Pizza Does Not Need a Great Crust

Daniel Zemans 40 comments

Crust isn't everything. There I said it. Given the quality of the sausage, the well-seasoned salt, and the heaps of real mozzarella (no "pizza cheese" nonsense here), the purely functional crust at Manzo's does not stand in the way of this being a crave-inducing pie. More

Chicago: Fontana Grill & Wine Bar, Pizza by Way of Boznia and Herzegovina

Daniel Zemans 1 comment

While the pizzas at Chicago's Fontana Grill (Uptown) are not worth going out of the way for, as a neighborhood spot, I'm a fan. The staff could not have been nicer, and the outdoor patio may well be calling my name once summer gets here. Also, the prices are not bad at all. All pizzas are buy one, get one free Sunday through Thursday and bottles of wine are half price on Tuesdays. More

Three Floyd's Brewpub: Top Notch Beer, Good Enough Pizza

Daniel Zemans 5 comments

If you are a fan of beer and are anywhere near Munster, Indiana, you owe it to yourself to check out Three Floyd's Brewpub. And if you want to eat while you're there, for pizza at a bar you can do a whole lot worse than the thin-crust pies served there. More
