The Brunch Dish: The Lox Plate at City Provisions
Reviews of brunch dishes.

Although Ravenswood's City Provisions is more known for its fresh and sustainable deli food and its catering, the Sunday-only brunch is not to be missed. As I sat down at one of their communal dining tables several Sundays ago, I found that amidst some unique brunch choices—red kuri squash and brussel sprout hash with poached eggs anyone?—was their own interpretation of a common brunch standard: the lox plate. The traditional everything bagel was accompanied by a smoked trout spread, cured salmon, chive cream cheese, onions, olives, beets, and radishes.
The trout spread had just the right amount of salt and combined perfectly when spread on the bagel and piled high with the salmon and various veggies. While the classic caper and onion standbys were still present on the plate, it was the beets and trout spread that gave the dish its modern spin and complimented the salmon. The dish also came with an apple and dill slaw of sorts that tasted just as good by itself as it did when eaten along with the salmon and cream cheese. Despite the fact that the plate seemed a tad overwhelming when it arrived, City Provisions' modern take on the lox plate proves that sometimes even the classics can benefit from a little updating.
