I was totally surprised to find destination-worthy tamales at Bombon Cafe, especially since they seemed to be almost an afterthought on the menu. But considering it is a Mexican bakery that produces all the bread for the tortas in-house, I had my expectations set much higher when I revisited Bombon for a sandwich.
The Sonora ($9.25) lived up to them. First off, the bread was delicately crisp on the outside, while also remaining flavorful and light on the inside. Add to that juicy and properly seared steak, caramelized onions, chiles, cheese, and avocado spread, and I realized I was staring down out one killer torta. I'm not sure why this place isn't mentioned more, but after this one visit I left incredibly impressed. I'd need to return a few more times to know for sure, but in the realm of Mexican sandwiches, it's at least playing in the same league as Cemitas Puebla and Xoco.
