Pancakes are why most people go to Bongo Room. Pancakes are why people go to Bongo Room on weekends and stand in line for two hours. Pancakes are why Chicagoans bring their out of town guests to Bongo Room. In case I haven't made myself clear, Bongo Room is known for its pancakes. And as I explained elsewhere, the reputation is very much deserved.
But Bongo Room is more than just a pancake joint; there are plenty of savory items on the menu. And the beef tenderloin and portobello sandwich ($13.25) is proof that the non-pancake options are not just there for show. The beef itself is a tender and flavorful hunk of meat that gets an extra boost of complementary flavor from the mushroom. The co-stars of the sandwich are joined by a layer of melted provolone and some basil pesto. There's far too much going on for ordinary bread to do the trick, but the ubercrusty toasted bolo roll is up to the task, completing a very satisfying sandwich..
