What is that complex feeling that the best neighborhood coffee shops give you? I think the impression that there's no need to rush the experience is part of it. There also has to be a general sense of certainty—that this is the right place to be right now. Undoubtedly it's also feeling included even though it might be your first time there. Finally, a carefully brewed cup of coffee is essential.

Bridgeport Coffee Company excels at all of the above. Sometimes the whole experience and atmosphere surrounding a meal elevates an otherwise simple sandwich to extraordinary levels of satisfaction. This was the case with the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Bagel Sandwich ($4.95), which I enjoyed this past cloudy Saturday morning. I chose an everything bagel because I'd be hard pressed to find a sandwich that wouldn't be improved by an everything bagel, but plain, multigrain, and jalapeño cheddar are also options. Whatever you pick, it's likely to be one of the freshest, most tender bagels you've ever had in Chicago. An uncommon level of restraint is shown with the amount of fillings, which makes for a perfectly-sized bagel sandwich that won't weigh you down for the rest of the day. If you happen to spend the rest of the day in the same place, at the same table, that's fine. You're welcome to.

I've always been a writer, but it took me way too long to realize that food writing is where it's at (poetry and short stories are certainly not where it's at, as it turns out). In September 2011, I started Macmaker, a blog where I waxed poetic about opening a French macaron stand in a farmers market, reviewed macarons around Chicago, tried making them myself exactly 11 times, and ultimately gave up in favor of the less-volatile and equally delicious whoopie pie. While researching macarons, I remained a faithful devotee of Serious Eats and became a contributor to the Chicago site soon after it launched, a fact I am still dumbfounded by.
