Editor's Note: In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year--so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the Windy City. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know!

Americana Submarine is steps away from the row of fried food featured on Lunch in the Loop, like Micky's Chicken and Fish and Coco's Famous Deep Fried Lobster. But unlike those restaurants, nothing on this menu is fried. When I asked what the most popular sandwich on the menu was, the cashier proudly exclaimed that it was the ominous sounding "Bomber."
The Bomber ($7.29 for 12" sub) is comprised of ham, spiced loaf (which is still somewhat of a mystery to me), Genoa, hard and soft salami, and when ordered with everything includes cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and sub sauce, which is basically Italian dressing. Hot peppers, rather than giardinera, come in the form of pickled jalapenos, which work surprisingly well at adding a pickled flavor to the pile of otherwise dense, salty, and fatty meat. It's all carefully stacked between Italian bread that's both chewy and soft at the same time. This is an uncomplicated and easy sandwich, but it's a quick fix if you're in a lunch rush downtown.
