Editor's Note: In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year--so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the Windy City. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know!
To paraphrase Freud, sometimes a grilled cheese is just a grilled cheese. Sure, there are those grilled cheeses that your mother used to lovingly prepare just for you—until you found out your dad got the exact same ones. And what about how jealous you were when you first had to cut your grilled cheese in half to share with someone else?
The Grilled Cheddar Cheese and Tomato ($6.00) at Township is not one of those grilled cheeses. This panini pressed, rye breaded sandwich is nothing out of the ordinary: your choice of swiss or cheddar, paired with tomato slices. And if I forgot to mention the garlic herb aioli, it could very well be because they forgot to add it. I didn't miss it much either way if they did. This might not be the grilled cheese of your dreams, but sometimes, a simple sandwich like this—with its ego in check—is all you need to fulfill your basest desires.
