Editor's Note: In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year--so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the Windy City. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know!
It requires almost no effort to appreciate the spicy beef sandwich ($11.50) at Eggy's. Sure, the beef happens to be beef tongue, but it's also absurdly tender beef tongue that is loaded on a pretzel bun, sprinkled with jalapeño slices, drenched in cheese sauce, and crowned with crispy onion rings. I actually feared that this overloaded sandwich would come off as greasy and one-note, but the tongue has just enough funk to remind you what you're eating, while the heat from the chiles manages to shine through the creamy deluge of cheese.
What does require some effort is finding the entrance to Eggy's. Located next to a cute little manicured park in Lakeshore East—a new development east of the Loop, filled with big, gleaming skyscrapers—one must deal with some urban designer's perverse sense of humor to find the place. I trekked down a massive concrete staircase, only later to find a somewhat hidden escalator just to the right of the front door. Regardless, maybe the thrill of the hunt makes you appreciate the sandwich even more.
