Editor's Note: In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year--so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the Windy City. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know!
Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
You know, it seems almost criminal to go to the Billy Goat Tavern and not order a cheeseburger. But to be fair, the Billy Goat Tavern has a surprisingly large menu of other items, including an egg sandwich, corned beef, Italian beef, and, well, a ribeye sandwich ($5.25)? Why did I use a question mark? The world will never know?
The thinly sliced ribeye is served on that familiar chewy and slightly stale-tasting kaiser roll, which we have our gripes about, and is woefully underseasoned. And by underseasoned, I mean, completely devoid of anything, even salt. It's also a bit tough in spots, which makes it difficult to recommend. If you're not in the mood for a burger, get one of the egg sandwiches instead (I can vouch for them), but, really, you just want a double cheeseburger and some of those great pickles.
