The Original Maid-Rite ($4.49)
The restaurant's main attraction arrives wrapped up, with a spoon nestled on top. I can't say I've ever had a burger come out quite like this.
When you unwrap the package, it's clear why. Ground meat immediately spills out on the wrapper. By the time you finish the thing, I'd say only half of the meat is eaten in the bun. Though it looks like just ground meat, under bun you'll also find ketchup, mustard, and pickles.
The Damage Done
This is what the spoon is for.
The Tender-Loin Sandwich ($5.99, $9.99 with fries and a drink)
Iowa is also known for pork tenderloin sandwiches, and Maid-Rite's version is as enormously round as others I've tried. The flattened pork comes with a crispy coating, and thanks to a suggestion from the manager, I also added some barbecue sauce to the ketchup, mustard, and pickles.
The skinny and blonde fries most resemble the specimens from McDonalds, with a little of the starch coating you'd find at Burger King.
