I'd be lying if I didn't admit that there are better farmers markets out there—but none of them are as close to my home and weekly routine-able as the one in good ol' Logan Square. Everything you could ask for on an early Sunday morning is at your fingertips: refreshing (though at $3 a cup, expensive) iced coffee from New Wave; seemingly never-ending tomato and green bean accentuated produce; truly exceptional focaccia, ciabatta, and beyond from Crumb; and if you ever make it past the revolving door of weekly folk acts, prepared foods. The $2 carne asada tacos get me every time (though I don't know that I would be as content eating them in an actual taqueria), but if you're in the mood for something sweet after all those fruits and veggies that you bought, wait in line at Zullo's.
Along with serving some very good looking chicken and veggie nuggets, you can also enjoy a piping hot bag of Apple Cider Doughnuts ($5.00). Lightly spiced batter is melon-balled into a makeshift hotel pan deep fryer, cooked until it returns crispy to the bubbling surface, and tossed with cinnamon and sugar. Though you could easily polish a bag off yourself, these finger-licking sweets make the perfect snack to pass around old friends and new. But get 'em while they're hot—the market goes back indoors starting in October, so you'll have to wait until next June to get the full farmer's market experience.
