As I discovered a few months ago, Branko's in Lincoln Park is a family-run operation with a few legitimate surprises on its menu of mostly Chicago classics. Sure, you can go for the natural casing hot dog or an extra-meaty Italian beef, but the real highlight is the grilled chicken sandwich ($5.99). Where most stands dish out overcooked and under-seasoned chicken, Branko's shows real care with its version.
It takes time, a fact that the cashier is clear about when you order. This turns out to be a good thing. Only after the order is the marinated chicken tossed on the grill. The result is chicken that is still juicy, but with definite grill marks. It's also gargantuan, so bring along a hungry friend to help you finish it.
