Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
I feel conflicted about Miller's Pub, though I do think my opinion can best be summed up by the leg of lamb on French bread ($9.95). On one hand, Miller's Pub looks like one of those awesome old Chicago restaurants with comfy booths and a gorgeous old bar—exactly the kind of place confident enough to serve a leg of lamb sandwich. But it also feels slightly kitschy and touristy, which explains the Miller's Pub t-shirts next to the entrance and the spinach artichoke dip. (The horror!)
Back to the sandwich. The lamb is tender and not too gamey. Sadly, it's served on a stiff and oddly spongy roll, which the restaurant for some cruel reason calls French bread. And then the real kicker: on the side is a mint jelly so impossibly neon green, it makes you wonder whether some of the green dye used to color the Chicago River found its way to the kitchen. But you know what? That jelly is also sweet and intriguingly minty, and though I worried about turning green myself, it actually plays reasonably well with the lamb. Basically, it's kind of awesome, sort of a train wreck, but ultimately satisfying.
