Katherine Duncan isn't exaggerating when she says she's wanted to own her own store for as long as she can remember. As a child, she set up shop in her basement and resold items she bought at the store with her Christmas money. Her siblings were her only customers. Now her customers include chocolate-lovers from across the city who visit her cozy Logan Square shop for a wide variety of hand-rolled truffles, caramels, and decadent hot chocolate.
In the world of small artisan food-makers, Katherine is a little unusual. Instead of a passion for one specific item born out of years of professional culinary experience, she has years of experience on the business side of the restaurant industry. Before starting Katherine Anne Confections six years ago in farmers markets around the city, she opened 50 Potbelly locations and now combines her management experience with her passion for chocolate to run her own shop and multiple farmers markets stands. She is completely self-taught and got most of her knowledge and training from reading. She shared some of that knowledge with me recently while putting together her Molé truffle, which is a featured flavor this month.
Other flavors available until the end of January include Blueberry Gin, Salted Caramel Latte, and a Tropical truffle that features pineapple, banana, rum, and ginger. If solid chocolate isn't your thing, you can also try some of the richest hot chocolate available anywhere. I suggest sampling three of the seven offerings in the form of a hot chocolate flight, which also comes with a complimentary mini-flight of marshmallows since no hot chocolate is complete without a complimentary marshmallow.
