Bub City serves barbecue for the masses, unless you happen to be one of the masses unprepared for a continuous onslaught of contemporary country music piped through the speakers. I could barely keep my concentration amidst all the sincere belting and all the watered down rabble-rousing. I realize Time Out Chicago already commented on this, but the music basically tells you all you need to know about the barbecue.

The meat in the pulled pork sandwich ($8.95) features a discernible bark and a smoke ring, but it is ultimately a little too soft, lacking a distinct personality. Even with all these qualifications, it's still probably the best barbecue in River North, and you'd have to go to Chicago Q in the Gold Coast to find something better. Luckily, the other elements of the sandwich fared much better. The squishy white bun was right on, as were the crisp and acidic pickles.
