Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Though mentioned several times on the site, I just realized that Oasis Cafe's falafel sandwich ($3.99) has never gotten its very own sandwich post. That's a shame, because while it now has some serious competition from dozens of new Mediterranean restaurants in the area, Oasis Cafe is still worth a visit.
As you may remember, it placed second in my hunt for the The Best Falafel Sandwich in the Loop. Though missing the vibrant array of toppings that places like Falafill, I Dream of Falafel, and Benjyehuda serve, the sandwich succeeds thanks to a warm and fluffy pita and some exceptionally crisp falafel balls, which hold their crunch even when drenched with tahini.
Can you believe it's taken me this long to mention the fact that it's located in the back of a jewelry store? I'm not sure if the idea is to lure people in with falafel and then hook them for a diamond ring, or if it's the other way around. Regardless, if you love restaurants hidden in unusual spaces like I do, it's probably worth stopping by just for a gawk.
