Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.

Is there any reason to visit Le Cafe du Marche at the Chicago French Market? Opened by the owners behind Bistro Voltaire, the stall in the West Loop market offers French-inspired sandwiches and salads. That sounds all well and good, but there is competition. The market already houses a couple great places to grab a sandwich (Pastoral and Wisma), not to mention two excellent shrines to smoked meats (Lillie's Q and Fumare), where you can also score a serious lunch. Well, based solely on the tuna melt ($6.50) I scored the other day, the answer is mostly yes.

Though the browning looks spotty in the photo, the success of the sandwich rests with the long and thin baguette, which has a crisp crust that shatters pleasingly when you bite in, leaving behind a mess of crumbs. Fortunately, it's also light, allowing you to really taste the shredded tuna and melted Swiss, along with a few briny black olives. Sure, it's not exactly on the same level as the places mentioned above, but another option in the Chicago French Market is never a bad thing.
