As we mentioned briefly last week in our picks for the best cheap eats in Wicker Park, Lillie's Q main location on North Ave. closed after a fire broke out in its basement. (Apparently, it was started by a faulty water heater.) A firefighter suffered minor injuries, but luckily no one was seriously hurt. But the blaze did do extensive damage to the restaurant, and it's unclear when it will reopen. Since all the meat was smoked in that building, its small shop in the Chicago French Market also had to shut down, though there is luckily some good news on that front.
Thanks to some kitchen space provided by Ovie Bar & Grill in the nearby Metra Transportation Center, the stand was able to reopen last Friday. The owners are clear that it will serve a "limited menu for some time," which for now means that it will only serve pulled pork by the pound or on a sandwich (which you can, and should, get with Southern-style coleslaw). While we'll miss the exceptional tri-tip, few places in Chicago do pulled pork better than Lillie's Q.
