For a vegetarian sandwich to be satisfying to a meat lover, it has to be done right. Is there enough between the bread to still give you a good bite? Are there enough flavors going on? It can be tough. The Assisi at Sopraffina ($4.09 for a half) is a good example of this struggle. It's one of two vegetarian options on their menu, which focuses more on Italian meats.
The sandwich has artichokes, roasted red peppers and tomatoes, marinated red onions, smoked mozzarella, lettuce, and chipotle mayonnaise, all served on multigrain flatbread. The artichokes give a bit of that thickness a meat contributes to a sandwich. The smoky taste and freshness of the cheese adds a nice element, not to mention that the string of it pulled on your first bite is truly satisfying. The chipotle mayo, however, can barely be detected. I could have really used more of a kick with that, as it's half the reason I wanted the sandwich at all. While overall it includes a good combination of flavors, it's just missing something (and I don't mean meat).
