A Sandwich a Day: Turkey Panini at Cafe Vienna

A Sandwich a Day

It's not hard to order something sweet when sitting amongst the display cases of beautiful pastries at Cafe Vienna. I didn't even know they had a full breakfast and lunch menu, since I've always been mesmerized by the tarts and cake slices. Savory was no mistake though, because the turkey panini ($7.49) was one of the better sandwiches I've had in months.

The combo of the artichokes with the turkey makes it hearty while still being a simple turkey sandwich. The turkey is so soft that it almost becomes a pulled meat when you're eating it. The tomato and muenster cheese balance with some juiciness, adding moisture while not sogging up the homemade focaccia bread.

The pesto is what brings it all together and makes it be anything but boring. It's one that's heavy on the basil, not on the oil, nuts or cheese. Pesto is one of those things that could be slathered on just about anything and I'd eat it, but instead of taking over the flavors, it just complements them. All in all these flavors go together so nicely, and while it's a sandwich that has a lot going on, they blend together to make for a bunch of Italian flavor that I still can't stop thinking about.
