2013 was all about the surprise. For the most part, my favorite dishes were the ones I randomly tried: a steak at an English pub, an Italian beef special at a deli known for Italian subs, a Hot Brown at a cocktail bar. Sure, I walked into David Burke's and Honey Butter Fried Chicken with a specific plan, but just as often I was impressed by something not in the game plan. Isn't that exciting? No matter how much I think I have the dining scene figured out, there is always more to find. I can't wait to get back to work in 2014, but here are the dishes that genuinely excited me in 2013.
