Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
I have a soft spot for Janik's Cafe, which is located at Damen on Division, just west of the corner. I live a few blocks away (you know, in case you want to stalk me). Janik's is a true mom-and-pop cafe, and they serve everything, from breakfast to sandwiches and salads. And guess what? They serve breakfast all day! Hooray!
I usually go for an afternoon Eggs Benedict, but their sandwich section is nice and big. And because we here at Serious Eats Chicago have a thing for Buffalo chicken wraps, I had to spring for the, well, buffalo chicken wrap ($8). This wrap is interesting—it starts with crunchy breaded chicken tenderloin drenched in Buffalo sauce, which is rolled into a tortilla with lettuce and tomato. But what makes this one different is the addition of corn and avocado. One of my deepest and darkest secrets is that I sometimes order Buffalo chicken wraps with avocado. Don't judge me! This comes with avocado by default.
Overall, it's a typical Buffalo wrap, with the strong flavor of Frank's hot sauce, while the addition of corn adds little chewy sweet nuggets and the avocado adds a little fatty silk to tone down the vinegar. Next time I'll ask for some blue cheese dressing to temper the vinegar a little more, but otherwise, it'll satisfy your Buffalo wrap craving. It also comes with a side of sun-dried tomato and vegetable pasta salad, so you've got a full meal—all for eight bucks. Not too shabby.
